Voices We Love: Jon Stewart

We love satire! We have acknowledged this before. The Daily Show and Jon Stewart are great examples of how satire can capture large amounts of people and get a message across. Sometimes though, Jon Stewart excuses himself from his comedy and acknowledges when something just needs to be dealt with seriously, without humor. The recent terrorist attack in Charleston, South Carolina by an American was one of those moments.

We have a lot of obstacles in our country where positive social change is needed.  Thank you Jon Stewart for acknowledging this.  We will miss you when you depart.

We also love Elite Daily! John Haltiwanger published a fantastic article on white privilege in the shadows of the Charleston tragedy.  The article does an excellent job of using one of the victims to illustrate how he is reminded of white privilege. He also references Jon Stewart.

Causees We Love: Gun Control

Gun control has got to be discussed.  That is the fact in this country.  It doesn’t have to be as severe as taking hunter’s guns away from them, but it can’t be people able to walk into a gun show and buy guns without proper procedure happening.  This map has just been released since Sandy Hook.  It is clear that we are not doing anything to stop children from killing children.

I also love this interview on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart.  These two lovable men do tell some truth about gun control.

A Conversation with Capitol Hill

It is so incredibly obvious that our elected officials are not concerned by leading and working together to solve the obstacles that they continue to come across as this year continues through the half way point.  We have always had difficulty between the democrats and the republicans but now it is getting so difficult for them to work together that they aren’t a performing government anymore than a bunch of children can manage a secret club where nobody knows the password.

Well, I have a couple of reference points to throw out there for the readers so if you are as foggy on the situation as I kind of am, it will help.  The first is a moment with Jon Stewart.  I realize that it is from a comedic point of view, but there is definitely truth in there.

The second is an article from CNN.  It seems to be mostly objective with the emphasis on how the public is calling Capitol Hill and letting our elected officials know what we, as the public who voted them into the position, think about the decisions being made.  We need to celebrate these moments where we as a population hold our government accountable for their actions.  As a country, there continues to be a greater gap between what our government is doing and what we actually know about.  If we don’t have an idea of what decisions they’re making, then the people representing us get away with making decisions that only benefit them and the people who is constantly whispering into their ear. We need to be doing the whispering.

Well here are two things for you if you would like to do some whispering or even blunt speaking.  Here is the direct number to Capitol Hill and they will patch you to your senators’ and/or representative’s office.

(202)224-3121

The second is the link to the Congressional Directory.  Use it as often as you need it.  These numbers should be in everyone’s phone just as work, your favorite delivery place and your parent’s home are.  It is all of our responsibility to be checking up with the people who we voted into office.

Shared Sacrifice

The talk from the Democratic Party right now is “Shared Sacrifice”.  What they mean is shared sacrifice for both parties on Capitol Hill but how does that translate to the rest of the country?  The bigger question is while they are debating what sacrifices both parties will make, why aren’t they really taking into what the American public is willing to sacrifice?

Of course, the lower and middle classes are constantly sacrificing.  We are the ones that continue to suffer when paying higher gas prices.  We are the ones affected every time there are tax changes and don’t even bother to question the sacrifice that everyone affected by the two hundred and forty tornadoes last week have to make while they wait for assistance.  Sacrifices that come with no notice, with no control, with no explanation constantly affect us and we make up the largest part of this country.

I feel that “shared sacrifice” should be a campaign for the entire country; not just the Democratic Party for a sales pitch.  Shared sacrifice is something we can all adapt to while living our everyday lives. We have all become greedy and in order to get to a place of productivity and balance again as a society, we are going to have to let go and compromise a little bit.  Take what has been happening in Wisconsin and many other states over the last four months for example.  The people of Wisconsin said yes, we will make compromises to what needs to be done to balance the budget.  As we then saw, that did not matter to Scott Walker and the very wealthy Koch brothers.  They went on to change the format of the bill so that it wasn’t even associated with the budget and they could vote legally, without the fourteen democrats in Illinois, to get rid of collective bargaining rights.  Who in this situation was not willing to have shared sacrifice?  Certainly not the group that continues to sacrifice.

As we are already getting the jargon from many “wanna be” candidates for the 2012 election, I want to see someone take responsibility for what they have done wrong, and make a real plan where we will all a part in fixing our countries situation.  Everyone from the poor to the rich, all on board, then we will get some major changes in the right direction. Our government has got to start working with its constituents and all adapt a “Shared Sacrifice” way of thinking.  The democrats at least had the words correctly, now we just need to get those words into physical action, not just whispered off the lips of one party on Capitol Hill.

Last October, Jon Stewart and Steve Colbert held a ‘Rally to Restore Sanity’ on the mall in Washington D.C. During this rally, Jon Stewart mentioned how we, in our everyday lives work together and compromise.  He uses the Lincoln Tunnel to get his point across.  This is the only video I could find that had the images of the cars flowing from nine lanes of traffic into two to get through the tunnel.  Thank you mantypants on youtube for this video. Now here, I will let Jon Stewart add to my point.
